(June 11, 2020) – The Ontario Intercollegiate Women’s Fastpitch Association (OIWFA) announces the cancellation of the fall 2020 OIWFA season and Championships.
This decision was not easy, and was made following consultation with all 13 OIWFA member teams and based on public health guidelines. As a result of the ever-evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, a safe return to play for a fall season, which includes a significant amount of cross-province travel, was neither practical nor realistic.
“We are of course very disappointed in having to make this decision for our 2020 season,” said OIWFA President Steph Manson. “However, the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and trainers is our main priority which reinforced that this was the right decision.”
Given the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic, no decisions have been made beyond the fall 2020 season. The OIWFA will be evaluating whether there is an opportunity for university softball competition as we enter 2021 and the winter/spring school semester.
“I would like to thank the OIWFA Executive for their extensive discussions, contingency planning and brainstorming as we worked through this unprecedented situation,” Manson added. “To our student-athletes: this cancellation has the biggest impact on you and we understand how disappointed you will be. We are deeply sorry that you will not be competing for an OIWFA Championship this fall; remember that all of us on the OIWFA Executive have you in our hearts and minds and we will be working hard to get back on the field when it is safe to do so.”
